Paying To Play: A Blog On Entrepreneurship

There’s a common saying among entrepreneurs that you can either pay now and play later or play now and pay later; whichever you choose, the latter will always be longer. Lucky for me, I understood this early on in my career and chose to pay now, play later. My mindset was, and still is to this day, that if I worked really hard for a few years, then I could live the rest of my life the way most people wouldn’t be able to do. Working hard in my twenties has put me on the path to living the way I choose – worry free of needing to ask for the day off – for the rest of my life.

My name is Justin Sgro and I’m the President of STC Direct Philly, where working hard leads to playing hard. I’ve always known I wanted to have a great life and provide for my family without having to stress about how to make that happen each month but I also knew that in order to do that, I had to sacrifice some things in the beginning. Looking back, the sacrifices I made at the beginning of my career are minimal compared to what I’d have to make down the road had I chosen not to make them then. Things like waking up an hour early to ensure my day started off right, wearing a suit when I really didn’t want to, going to work when I’d rather be on vacation, or telling my friends I couldn’t join them for happy hour because I needed to wrap things up in the office. It takes a lot of time and preparation to truly be successful in anything you do, and it was no different for me.

We work really hard here at STC Direct Philly. I’m thankful for the sacrifices that we made early on in our company’s history that allows us to play even harder now! Any entrepreneur will tell you that the rewards of your success are always sweeter when you look back and realize what all it took to get there. There’s not a single thing I gave up at the beginning of my career that hasn’t been given back to me sevenfold now. Holding the keys to STC Direct reminds me each day that my journey is far from over. There are still goals to be hit, trips to be taken, and opportunities to provide. I’m grateful, though, to be part of such a wonderful organization that rewards our people with vacations, domestically and internationally, custom suits, sporting games, and bonuses, NOW!

Being an entrepreneur is my way of ensuring that I am in control of my life and will never have to say “I can’t” to anyone, especially myself and my family. I don’t have to ask for permission to take my family on vacation, I’ll never have to rewrite my resume, and I can have an enormous amount of fun at work every day. Most importantly, I will do it with people who are equally as motivated to succeed as I was in my beginning years. Success is a result of effort and dedication. It takes sacrifices…but it pays off BIG TIME.
